How to unblock your toilet

There are a lot of things that can lead to a blocked toilet. Luckily, there are lots of easy ways you can fix it. Follow this guide to safely unblock your toilet:

To unblock your toilet

You will need

  • A jug
  • A bucket
  • Rubber gloves
  • Washing up liquid

What to do

  1. Close the water supply at the valve, which can be found to the left, or the right of the cistern.
  2. Wearing rubber or disposable gloves, remove as much stagnant water as possible using the jug.
  3. Pour half a glass of washing up liquid directly into the bowl.
  4. Wait ten minutes, then quickly pour three litres of hot water into the bowl.
  5. If the level doesn’t fall for a few minutes and there’s enough space inside the bowl, repeat.

If that doesn’t work

You will need

  • Rubber gloves
  • A plunger

What to do:

  1. Do not flush the toilet as it will only make it worse and can result in a bit of a mess.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, press the plunger firmly into the toilet and slowly pull it back up at least ten times until you hear the water going down the pipes.
  3. If you’re sure it has worked, flush the toilet to check.

If that still doesn't work, try this:

You will need

  • A toilet auger

What to do:

  1. Push the auger into the toilet, tip first, until you can feel the blockage.
  2. Rotate the auger with the handle while pushing downwards.
  3. The auger should break the blockage into smaller pieces that can be removed easily by flushing the toilet.
  4. If the tip of the auger pierces the blockage, you can pull it out from the bowl.
  5. Repeat as necessary until the waste outlet is free.
