Filling a hole in your wall

It doesn’t matter how careful you are, if you live in the same home for a while, you will find holes in your inside walls that need patching.

Whether that’s a small hole left by a nail, or a larger one, fixing these holes is cheap, easy and a useful skill to have.

What you need

What you need for a small hole:

  • Sandpaper.

  • A damp cloth.

  • Wall filler.

  • Putty knife.

  • Paint that matches the colour of your wall.

  • Paintbrush.

How to fill a small hole in your wall

  • 1.

Use the sandpaper to sand around the hole to smooth out any rough spots, before wiping off any dust using the damp cloth.

  • 2.

Wait for the wall to dry, then spread a layer of the wall filler over the hole using the putty knife.

  • 3.

Allow the filler to dry overnight, before sanding it down until it is level with the wall. You should be able to run your finger over it and not notice a bump.

  • 4.

Paint over the filled hole with a paintbrush.

What you need

What you need for a large hole:

  • Wall filler.

  • Wall hole patch.

  • Putty knife.

  • Sandpaper.

  • A damp cloth.

  • Paint.

  • Paintbrush.

How to fill a large hole in your wall

  • 1.

Peel off the wall hole patch backing and press it to the wall covering the hole.

  • 2.

Spread on three coats of wall filler, letting each layer dry thoroughly before applying the next.

  • 3.

Wait overnight for the top layer of filler to dry. Then sand the filler down so that the edges of the patch feathers out to the surrounding wall. You should be able to run your finger over it and not notice a bump.
