How to unblock your toilet
There are a lot of things that can lead to a blocked toilet. Luckily, there are lots of easy ways you can fix it. Follow this guide to safely unblock your toilet:
To unblock your toilet
You will need
- A jug
- A bucket
- Rubber gloves
- Washing up liquid
What to do
- Close the water supply at the valve, which can be found to the left, or the right of the cistern.
- Wearing rubber or disposable gloves, remove as much stagnant water as possible using the jug.
- Pour half a glass of washing up liquid directly into the bowl.
- Wait ten minutes, then quickly pour three litres of hot water into the bowl.
- If the level doesn’t fall for a few minutes and there’s enough space inside the bowl, repeat.
If that doesn’t work
You will need
- Rubber gloves
- A plunger
What to do:
- Do not flush the toilet as it will only make it worse and can result in a bit of a mess.
- Wearing rubber gloves, press the plunger firmly into the toilet and slowly pull it back up at least ten times until you hear the water going down the pipes.
- If you’re sure it has worked, flush the toilet to check.
If that still doesn't work, try this:
You will need
- A toilet auger
What to do:
- Push the auger into the toilet, tip first, until you can feel the blockage.
- Rotate the auger with the handle while pushing downwards.
- The auger should break the blockage into smaller pieces that can be removed easily by flushing the toilet.
- If the tip of the auger pierces the blockage, you can pull it out from the bowl.
- Repeat as necessary until the waste outlet is free.
