What is Right to Buy?
Right to Buy allows most council tenants to buy their council home at a discount.
This means that if you are one of our customers with a preserved tenancy from when your home was managed by your council, you may be eligible for Right to Buy.
The maximum discount is £84,200 and the amount you get depends on:
- How long you have lived in your council home,
- The type of home you are buying - a flat or a house,
- The value of your home.
Who can apply for Right to Buy?
You can apply to buy your council home if:
- It is your only or main home,
- It is self-contained,
- You are a secure tenant,
- You have had a public sector landlord (for example, a council, housing association or NHS trust) for three years. It does not have to be three years in a row,
- You do not have any legal problems with debt, or any outstanding possession orders against you.
