Four easy ways to ensure you are recycling correctly
Recycling only works if we all take a few minutes to ensure we are doing it correctly.
Fortunately, there are several easy steps you can take to make sure you are doing your part:
-
1.
Sort your recycling.
Make sure the things you put in your recycling are actually recycled in your area. Below, we have a list of all the local councils in which we operate and what can be recycled in each authority. -
2.
Wash and squash.
To reduce contamination and free up space, quickly 'wash and squash' recyclable plastics, foil and cartons. Glass also needs to be washed, but, you may need to take it to a bottle bank as it is not recycled in your bins everywhere. -
3.
No plastic bags.
Plastic bags are not allowed in recycling. This means you should not bag your recycling and instead, dump it loosely into your recycling bin. Many plastic bags can now be recycled at special collection points in large supermarkets. -
4.
Don't 'wishcycle'.
Wishcycling is when we optimistically put non-recyclable items in the recycling bin. This is actually one of the worst mistakes you can make when it comes to recycling as it can cause contamination to the entire bin and rejection by your local authority. In flats, the cost for removing rejected waste is charged back to the block, which could cause service charges to increase.
Recycling in your area
Below is a list of all the local councils in which we operate. If you are unsure about what you can recycle in your area, please find your local council below and check on their website. You can find your local council here on the government website.
East Hampshire District Council
South Oxfordshire District Council

It's easy, all you need to do is enter your postcode into their web tool, as well as the item you’re looking to recycle. Then, click the ‘Look it up!’ button and the tool will show you the bin/box at home to use.
Please note that this only works for Reading, Bracknell Forest and Wokingham Council areas.
